Czapek Introduces the Promenade L’Écume des Jours
Inspired by Boris Vian’s celebrated 1947 novel, Czapek’s latest Promenade combines blue enamel, mother-of-pearl, jade and miniature painting in a poetic limited edition of just 18 pieces.
The new Czapek Promenade L’Écume des Jours combines literature, artistic craftsmanship and independent watchmaking in a 38mm steel case.
Czapek has introduced a new interpretation of its Promenade collection, and this time the inspiration comes not from traditional watchmaking, but from literature.
The Promenade L’Écume des Jours takes its name from Boris Vian’s 1947 novel of the same name, translating some of the book’s most memorable imagery into a highly detailed watch dial.
Limited to just 18 pieces, the new release combines blue enamel, mother-of-pearl, jade and miniature painting, all built around Czapek’s automatic Calibre SXH5.1.
For a collection that Czapek describes as one of its more intimate and expressive lines, the literary connection feels particularly appropriate.
From Literature To Watchmaking
Boris Vian was one of post-war France’s most distinctive creative figures.
An engineer, jazz trumpeter, songwriter and novelist, Vian moved freely between technical and artistic disciplines. His 1947 novel L’Écume des Jours tells the story of Colin and Chloé, set within a surreal world where imagination regularly bends reality.
Two elements from the book are particularly important to Czapek’s new watch.
The first is the pianocktail, an imaginary piano capable of creating cocktails based on the music played.
The second is the water lily that takes root in Chloé’s lung, one of the novel’s central and most memorable metaphors.
Czapek has incorporated both directly into the dial.
Piano keys circle the dial while a water lily at 4:30 serves as the running-seconds display.
A Dial Built Around Two Symbols
The dial began as an exploration of pearled mother-of-pearl before developing into something considerably more narrative.
A ring of piano keys surrounds the flange, referencing Vian’s fictional pianocktail.
At 4:30, where the Promenade Goutte d’Eau places its small seconds, Czapek has instead created a water lily, turning one of the novel’s central symbols into the watch’s running-seconds display.
The construction itself is equally elaborate.
Czapek worked with specialist dialmakers Donzé Cadrans and MD’Art to create the different layers.
The underlying Goutte d’Eau enamel dial is produced by Donzé Cadrans. Recesses are then laser-cut to accommodate the mother-of-pearl piano-key ring and the jade disc beneath the seconds display.
The black piano keys are hand-painted, while the jade is further laser-worked to form the seconds track.
The water lily itself is laser-cut from titanium, chosen for its low weight, before being finished using miniature painting.
The result is a dial that rewards close inspection rather than immediately revealing every detail.

A Very Different Kind Of Promenade
The Promenade collection was introduced in 2024 and has become one of Czapek’s more expressive platforms.
Where some of the manufacture’s watches place movement architecture or traditional finishing at the centre, the Promenade allows the dial to become the main storytelling element.
That approach is particularly visible here.
The watch is not simply decorated with a literary motif. Its layout, materials and moving components are all built around references to Vian’s fictional universe.
Even the name itself became part of the creative process.
Czapek CEO Xavier de Roquemaurel has described himself as a longtime reader of Boris Vian and explained that the idea for L’Écume des Jours came naturally while looking at the pearled mother-of-pearl of an earlier version of the project.
38mm Of Independent Watchmaking
The watch is housed in a 38mm stainless-steel case, keeping the proportions relatively restrained despite the complexity of the dial.
A domed sapphire crystal sits above the dial, while a sapphire caseback provides a view of the movement.
Water resistance is rated to 50 metres.
The watch is delivered on a dark blue nubuck strap, although Czapek also offers a stainless-steel Milanese mesh bracelet as an alternative.
The 38mm steel case keeps the Promenade L’Écume des Jours compact, allowing the dial to remain the visual focus.
Calibre SXH5.1
Inside sits Czapek’s automatic Calibre SXH5.1.
The movement uses a Swiss lever escapement and a variable-inertia balance with four gold inertia blocks, operating at 4Hz / 28,800 vibrations per hour.
Power comes from a micro-rotor made from recycled 950 platinum, feeding a single barrel that delivers a 60-hour power reserve.
The calibre measures 30mm across and just 4.2mm thick, with 127 components and 26 jewels.
Seven skeletonised bridges draw inspiration from François Czapek’s nineteenth-century pocket watches, while the finishing includes openworked ratchets, sandblasted black bridges, bevelled angles and straight-grained sides.
Calibre SXH5.1 combines a recycled platinum micro-rotor with seven skeletonised bridges inspired by historic François Czapek pocket watches.
Limited To 18 Pieces
The Czapek Promenade L’Écume des Jours will be produced in an edition of only 18 pieces.
Each watch will also be delivered in a special-edition presentation box containing a copy of the Boris Vian novel that inspired it.
That detail feels particularly appropriate.
This is ultimately a watch built around a story, and Czapek has gone further than simply borrowing a title. The novel’s imagery is worked directly into the dial architecture, the materials and even the movement of the seconds hand.
For collectors drawn to watches where craftsmanship extends beyond conventional finishing, L’Écume des Jours offers something unusually personal.
